The Great Bengaluru Bake Show 2020

The Great Bengaluru Bake Show 2020, powered by 2m Cocoa was held in Bengaluru on 18th and 19th January 2020. This was the second bake show conducted by homebakers.co.in in Bengaluru. We saw a great turnout for the cake exhibit viewings, competition participation, panel discussions, felicitation of Bengaluru's & Chennai's Top 25 Home Bakers and demos & workshops with the experts! The footfall for the event was close to 300 people in a span of less than 9 hours.

The competition was structured in a way that would ensure that all participants would have a suitable category which they could enter. We had six categories and we witnessed incredible participation in all of them. It was also a forum where bakers around the city could exchange their ideas, latest developments and hone their skills. There were many exhibitors who had put up stalls selling innovative products to cater to everyone’s baking needs.

The Cake Competition

The main motivation behind the bake show was to showcase the inherent diversity of the baking industry. To ensure this we had six categories of competition to cover almost everyone’s styles, tastes and skills in the industry. The response to this was immense and we witnessed a showcase of 100 variety of cakes spread across six categories.

The participants’ entries were splendid to look at and were clear indicators of the skill and experience of the participants. The judges were put in a tough spot in deciding the winners of the competition. This goes to show that the entrants were all superb in their craft and had given their best on that day.

The judges really appreciated the quality of the participants’ entries and found it quite a challenge to pick one masterpiece over another as the winner in each category. These cakes were, at the end of the competition, given away in a local slum to underprivileged children with the help of Robinhood Army, a volunteer organization that strives to collect excess food from establishments and distributes it amongst the less privileged.

The prizes that were up for grabs included were cash prizes upto Rs. 2500 from homebakers.co.in, goodies from 2m Cocoa, Bakersville, Ossoro Flavours, Fab Flavours & Fragrances worth Rs. 6250, video tutorials from Ashwini Sarabhai's The Dream Cakes worth Rs. 5,000, Discount Vouchers from Cook and Bake with Deepali, 3 days and 2 nights holidays from Sterling Resorts worth Rs. 20,000, Six months of subscription from Serder Yenner's Cake Tutorials and Cakenote each worth Rs. 5,000, Two 6-Day Fabricake programmes on Cake Decorations and Toppers each worth 22,000 from WhiteCaps International School of Pastry and On 3-day course worth Rs. 15,000 from Academy of Pastry Arts, Bengalore.

Expert sessions

To ensure that there is a constant upswing in a home baker’s repertoire of skills it is pertinent to ensure that there is continuing education. The Great Bengaluru Bake show, to ensure this, engaged a number of experts to hold both hands-on masterclasses and demo sessions for the participants and attendees.

Demonstrations on Day 1

The demo sessions were conducted by a number of different experts including a Sugar Roses class by Lubna Gafur, Chandelier cake by Faiza Hakim, How to build and transport cakes like a pro by Hima Bindu, Modelling Cute Farm Animal by Divya Haldipur and Eggless Macarons class by Chef Michelle Peris of Academy of Pastry Arts.

Hands-on Masterclasses on Day 2

The masterclasses on ‘making cute girl figures’, 'Sugar Flowers - Dhalia Pom Pom' and ‘learn sharp edges’ were held by Parejaat Boorah, Arati Mirji and Jayedra Vijayselvan.
