Pinkle Sachdev is a Hyderabad based home baker, and her venture is Pinklucious Baker. She specializes exclusively in eggless goodies. She generally stays away from using fondant in her cakes and tries to use white chocolate coloured ganache instead wherever possible. Her endeavour is to bake cakes and other treats in such a way that it can be eaten as a whole and to simply bring joy to others. Choosing her passion as her profession has helped her give her best. We got the chance to interview her as a part of our initiative to interview home bakers across India and to give them a platform to share their journey!
1. Tell us a bit about how your venture started out!
I used to see my sister in law bake cakes at home and I was fascinated by it. Eventually, I learned how to bake. I have learned the basics of the chemistry of baking. I supplemented this with information from YouTube & other sources on the internet. My family n friends started ordering cakes and other goodies from me. With their support, I was able to start my own venture.
2. What were the initial difficulties that you faced, and how has it helped you become the baker that you are today?
Although working from home gives you comfort & convenience, being a home baker is hard work. I don’t have anyone else to help me & I do everything myself. The satisfaction that I get out of my baking makes it worthwhile. My one difficulty is that it is sometimes very difficult to find good quality raw material and tools in India at affordable prices. To solve this, I have gotten many of my things from the US through family friends.
3. How do you decide to price? Do you have issues such as customers comparing your price to stores and asking for lower prices?
I follow my own method of pricing based on the ingredients, time spent & design, among other things. Clients should ideally not compare your work with retail stores or any amateur baker, but the reality is that they do. People do compare my prices with bakeries also, but when I tell them about pre-mixes and other chemical additives used in bakeries, they understand the difference. The market has taken a turn towards healthy goods.
4. What is your signature dish and why do you love baking it?
My Belgium chocolate ganache/ truffle cake is one of my best-selling cakes and by default it became my signature cake too. It’s a cake that melts in your mouth, and clients usually come back for the same flavour.
5. Do you face any challenge with delivery? How do you manage your deliveries?
Delivery is a big challenge. People like my work and would discuss everything but would withdraw in the end because of distances and the issue of pick up. Losing potential business made me try out Ola or Uber for my single or two-tier cakes and has worked well so far. It has made my life much easier.
6. What are your top three tips for any aspiring baker?
Learn from the basics and get them right. Take classes and update your skills constantly as there are new techniques coming up every day in this industry. Give yourself enough time and your journey will be successful. Never compromise on quality. That’s a major reason why a client would choose a home baker.
