The Great Bengaluru Bake Show 2020: The Winners Speak!

The Great Bengaluru Bake Show was held on January 18th, 2020, with a footfall of over 600 baking enthusiasts. Over 120 bakers of the city participated in the cake competition which was held across 6 categories. In this article, we have featured several of the winners and runners up of this competition. Read on to find out more about these city bakers and what they created for the event!

Basabi S, Winner, Rustic Cake category

Basabi S is an expert decorator of cakes. She places emphasis on the overall personality of her cakes. She swears by the mantras of health, taste and perfect presentation. Her cakes are loved by her clients and the Icecream cake, Rasmalai cake, and Chocolate cake are the big hits amongst her fanbase.

Her entry in the Rustic Cake category was a whole wheat Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and fresh strawberries, black raisins, and cinnamon. Her cakes have multiple layers to it with different exotic fruits and this particular one had a lot of strawberries. She did not add any syrup to the cake due to its inherent moistness which further added to its’ health factor. The cake was made entirely out of wheat which makes the cake a healthy choice at all times.

Anu, Winner, Celebration cake, Non-Fondant category

Anu is an individual who has taken her hobby and passion to the next level by leveraging her business under the banner of Oven Delicacies. Her speciality is theme-based non-fondant customized cakes. She has been a top-rated home baker in 2019 - bagging a Top 25 spot in Bengaluru and Top 50 in India!

Her 3D Nemo cake turned heads in the celebration cake category at the cake show. She found the cake technically quite challenging to create, as it was completely carved and finished out of cake and whipped cream frosting with very minimal usage of fondant just for the fins and corals. Her inspiration was to create something different from regular round/square cakes.

Divya Ramachandra, Winner, Fondant Sculpted cake category

Divya’s exhibit took the ‘cake’ at the cake show with her decadent cake acting as a tableau showcasing the iconic lion king movie. The scene depicted is the Simba being revealed to the rest of the kingdom. Her drive to create something different lead to the ideation and execution of the present cake.

Sheetal Chourasia, Winner, Decorative Exhibit, and Wedding cake category

Sheetal is an expert cake artist who believes that the idea cake is simple, unique and has a clean attractive finish. Her skills have been showcased in various competitions around the country in various cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

Recently she entered The Great Bangaluru Bake Show 2020 of Homebakers.co.in in which her workpiece stood 1st place in the Decorative Exhibit and wedding cake category. She presented a unique design of her imagination created using pear-shaped houses placed on an old tree and passing down a riverside.

Another piece she made was of Dr A.P.J.Kalam, the former Indian president (2002-2007) and Missile Man of India. This cake was made with real cake sponge and sculpted/carved in the shape of a human body. It also included the Indian Flag with edible fabric and 5 missiles which he had launched.

Roshni, Winner, Cupcake Decoration category

Roshni was a first-time competitor but that did not stop her from shining at the Bengaluru Cake festival where she won the cupcake decoration category. Her decorative efforts involved a multitude of design schemes where she used multiple tips to pipe out flowers. These flowers were then used to create a bouquet. The bouquet included close to 50 flowers. The flowers that were piped included roses, dahlias, carnations, open peonies and daisies which were placed over coffee cupcakes.

Jenitha Bharath, Runner Up, Health Bakes category

Jenitha Bharath is a trained home baker who has been a veteran of the home baking circuit, as she has been baking for quite some time. Baking for her started off as a hobby and has now become a full-time business. She has been trained by world-class bakers and her training is reflected in her creations. She is quite the innovator and has constantly engaged in reinventing herself both in artistic designs and cake flavours. She has now made her foray into healthy baking and hopes to open a successful cafe one day. Her creation for this competition was a healthy version of brownies.

Nikita Nayak, Runner Up, Decorated Exhibits, and Wedding Cake category

She is an enthusiastic baker and here is her take on her cake- “When two people in love decide to spend their life together, the moment is magical and lasts a lifetime. This cake personifies that moment. A fairy tale! magic! Love! Various textures are used on the cake to show the magic in this world. Where sugar flowers show the reality element, the fantasy flowers and shimmer add the whimsical element to the cake. A hand-painted tier to showcase the fragile yet colourful creations of this beautiful world. This cake brings out earthly elements like the trees, the dense forests together with the whimsical elements like the fantasy flowers and beautiful birds of the garden with a touch of gold.”
